Open enrollment for 2027 runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Outside those dates you need a qualifying life event, which usually gives you 60 days to enroll.
For most events you have 60 days after the event. For losing coverage or moving you can report from 60 days before to 60 days after, so you can line up a new plan with no gap. If you lose MaineCare, CoverME.gov gives you 90 days.
Usually the first day of the month after you pick a plan. If you are losing coverage, it is the first of the month after you pick a plan or after the old coverage ends, whichever is later. A new baby's coverage can start on the date of birth or adoption.
Since March 2026, CoverME.gov handles special enrollment through its Consumer Assistance Center rather than online self-service: 1-866-636-0355 (TTY 711), Monday to Friday, 8 to 5. Expect to show proof of the event, such as a letter from your old insurer or employer, or proof of your old and new address. We can walk you through it and have your documents ready before you call.
MaineCare enrolls all year, so check it first. Otherwise the next chance is open enrollment, November 1. Do not wait until the last week: December 15 is the deadline for coverage on January 1.
Usually 60 days after the coverage ends, and you can start up to 60 days before it ends so there is no gap.
