Do the 2027 MaineCare work rules apply to me?

Reviewed October 21, 2026 by Christopher York, licensed Maine health insurance producer (license PRR259230)

The new rules start January 1, 2027 for MaineCare expansion adults ages 19 to 64.

A person meets the rule with about $580 of earnings in a month, or 80 hours, or school at least half time, unless an exemption applies.

If MaineCare ends, there are usually 90 days to choose a CoverME.gov plan. This check does not decide the case.

Six yes-or-no questions. Nothing is sent. The words below are the exemptions and the work rule already published on this site, plus other exemptions DHHS lists.

1. Are you age 19 to 64?
2. Are you pregnant, or within 12 months after giving birth?
3. Are you a parent or caretaker of a child 13 or younger, or caring for an adult with a disability?
4. Are you unable to work because of a health condition, or in substance use treatment?
5. Are you in school at least half time?
6. Do you already earn at least $580 in a month, or complete 80 hours of work, school, volunteering or a work program?
