Usually CoverME.gov renews you automatically. That is not the same as being on the right plan at the right price.
If you do nothing
- If your plan is still offered, you are usually re-enrolled in it for 2027.
- If your insurer discontinues your plan, you may be moved to a similar plan it chooses.
- If your insurer leaves CoverME.gov, as Mending Health does on January 1, 2027, you cannot simply carry on. You must pick a new plan during open enrollment.
Why doing nothing is risky this year
- Rates rose about 14.8% on average for 2027, and much more on some plans. Last year's best plan may be this year's expensive one.
- The enhanced subsidies ended after 2025, so many people pay more than they expect.
- If CoverME.gov renews your credit on old income information, you can owe money back at tax time, and since 2026 there is no cap on repayment.
- Doctors and drug lists change between years.
The four things to check before December 15
- Read the renewal notice from your insurer: next year's premium and any plan changes.
- Update your 2027 income and household on CoverME.gov.
- Compare plans again: your doctors, prescriptions and the out-of-pocket maximum.
- Choose by December 15 for coverage starting January 1.
