Does a health insurance broker cost more in Maine?

Christopher York, licensed Maine health insurance producer · October 2026

No. A CoverME.gov plan costs the same whether you apply alone, call the state's help line, or sit down with a licensed broker. Here is how that works.

Plan prices are set before you ever talk to anyone

Each insurer files its 2027 rates with the Maine Bureau of Insurance, and the Bureau approves them. That approved price is the price, for everyone. There is no broker mark-up and no discount for going it alone. Your subsidy is the same too, because CoverME.gov calculates it from your household and income, not from who helped you apply.

So how does a broker get paid?

When you enroll, the insurance company pays the broker a commission out of the premium it already charges. You never get a bill from us. That is true for individual and family plans on CoverME.gov, and it is how most small-group plans work as well.

What a broker will not do

We will not create a CoverME.gov account for you, log into yours or ask for your password. We do not sell your information. Before we help, Maine and federal Marketplace rules require your written consent, which you can sign from your phone and cancel any time.

How to check that a broker is licensed

Every broker who sells health insurance in Maine must hold a Maine producer license. You can look up any Maine licensee through the Bureau of Insurance's online license search. Our details: Christopher York, Maine license PRR259230, National Producer Number 17759447.

Common questions

Do I pay more for a CoverME.gov plan if I use a broker?

No. Plan prices are approved by the Maine Bureau of Insurance and are the same whether you apply alone or with a broker. The insurer pays the broker.

Is my subsidy smaller if I use a broker?

No. CoverME.gov calculates your premium tax credit from your household size and expected income. Who helps you apply does not change it.

Can I switch to a broker if I already have a plan?

Yes. A broker can help with your renewal or a change during open enrollment, or after a qualifying life event, at no cost to you.
